Doc Severinsen, legendary trumpeter and band leader on The Tonight
Show with Johnny Carson, joins with top Latin artists to present
"The Rhythm of Life". Show features classical Spanish music with a
jazz flair, American and Latino ballads, and movie music. 7:30 PM. July 10-20: On Golden Pond
Ernest Thompson's touching story of Ethel and Norman Thayer, a
couple in the twilight years of their marriage. The play is set in
the Thayer's summer house on a lake called Golden Pond. July 11: Transylvania Symphony Orchestra - From the New World
Conductor Steven Smith leads the Transylvania Symphony Orchestra

A very popular art show with unusual and interesting pieces for
sale. From 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. July 12: Andres Cardenes and Brevard Sinfonia
Conductor and soloist Andres Cardenes leads the Brevard Sinfonia
through an evening of classical music, including Beethoven's
Symphony No. 8. 7:30 PM. July 13: Berlioz and Debussy
Conductor Steven Smith leads the BMC Orchestra
through an afternoon of music by Berlioz and Debussy. Roberto Diaz on viola.
3:00 PM. July 17-19: Laugh Your Asheville Off Comedy Festival
The Laugh Your Asheville Off Comedy Festival is the largest stand-up
comedy festival in the southeast, featuring over twenty comics in
downtown Asheville. July 17-20: Annual Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands
Over two hundred craftspeople from the Southern Highland Craft Guild fill two floors with fine handcrafted
items, while local musicians play live on the arena stage, and craft
educators share their knowledge with children in hands-on projects.
Open 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM Thursday through Saturday, and 10:00 AM to
5:00 PM on Sunday. July 18-19: Mountain Wildlife and Wilderness Days
The 5th Annual Mountain Wildlife and Wilderness Days, held in the
Sapphire Valley Resort. July 19-20: Summer Colors Fine Art Show
More than 50 artists offering paintings, jewelry, pottery and more.

Conductor Grant Llewellyn leads the BMC Orchestra
through an afternoon of musical works by Beethoven and Mahler.

Part of a free summertime lecture series. 6:30 PM. July 24-August 10: On Broadway
An original review presenting the best of 70 years of musicals in
Highlands, including popular songs from South Pacific, The Sound of
Music, Annie, Fiddler on the Roof and other Broadway hits. July 25: The Titan
Conductor Keith Lockhart leads the Transylvania Symphony Orchestra
through an evening of classical music by Mozart and Mahler. Amy Schwartz Moretti on violin. 7:30 PM.
July 25-27: Bele Chere Festival 2008
The largest free street festival in the southeastern US, with music,
food, arts and crafts and festivities. Held annually in downtown
Asheville since 1979. July 25-27: Cashiers Antique Show
The annual Cashiers Antique Show runs from Friday to Sunday. Call Hazel
Giles for more information. July 26: Cashiers Music Jam
The first annual Cashiers Music Jam features live local musical
talent, activities for kids and more. Hosted by the Cashiers Chamber
of Commerce to benefit the Cashiers Walking Trail. Free admission;
donations accepted. From 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
July 26: Brahms and Adams
Conductor Steven Smith leads the Brevard Synfonia
through classical works by Brahms, Mozart and Adams. Richard Deane on

Conductor Keith Lockhart leads the BMC Orchestra
and Chorus through an afternoon of musical works by Strauss and Orff.

3:00 PM. July 31: Highlands Male Chorus
The 25-member choral group from Highlands, NC will be performing "A
Patriotic Tribute to America". Admission is $5.00 per person.
7:00 PM in the Sapphire Room. August 2008August 1-15: Biltmore Estate Summer Evening ConcertsStunning sunsets and the intimate setting of Biltmore House's South Terrace make Summer Evening Concerts unlike any other event. Artists include Gladys Knight, BB King, The Beach Boys and REO Speedwagon. The Biltmore House is America's largest home and is surrounded by breathtaking gardens. The Estate is also home to a hotel, winery, restaurants, shopping, equestrian center and more on its 8,000 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains. August 7: Rally for the Cure Golf Tournament
Enjoy a round of golf in a beautiful setting and support a great
cause. Proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

One of three annual shows held throughout the season. Folk art, crafts,

Friends of Panthertown fundraising event at the pavilion at The Divide

Three days of great bluegrass music and fun for the whole family. August 14-31: Inherit the Wind
The Highlands Playhouse closes their season with a Pulitzer
Prize-winning play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee. The
death of Clarence Darrow in 1938 closed a chapter in this story of
one of America's most fascinating trials. August 16-31: 11th Annual Cashiers Designer Showhouse
Presented by The Cashiers Historical Society. Seventeen designers
have collaborated on Mountain Top Farm, a unique 1920's mountain
lodge. Get a glimpse of the past blended with today's mountain style
living. August 21: An Italian Experience Wine Dinner
A culinary delight at The Farm at the Old Edwards Inn in
Highlands.
6:00 PM. August 21-24: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
The Highlands Cashiers Players present this comedy classic with
music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. August 22-24: Goombay!
The YMI Cultural Center's Goombay! festival offers a variety of
entertainment, from steel drums and African-American dancers to
local gospel groups and contemporary rhythm bands. Enjoy an
authentic Caribbean meal at Island of Delight Café and browse
vendors along the streets selling everything from ice cream to Third
World crafts. August 22: Relay for LifeRelay for Life of Mountain Top is holding the Relay
for Life event to raise funds for the American Cancer Society,
celebrate those who have survived cancer and remember those who have

political wife who has mislaid her prepared remarks and must draw on
her experiences and recollections to fulfill a speaking engagement

This year's showhouse is Chestnut Cottage, located in the heart of

Part of a free summertime lecture series. 6:30 PM. August 29-September 1: 62nd Annual North Carolina Apple Festival
This sprawling festival features a street fair with over 150 arts
and crafts vendors, continuous live musical entertainment, apple
growers and their apples, children's and youth activities, food, and
on Labor Day, the King Apple Parade. Henderson County is the largest
apple-producing county in North Carolina. September 2008September 5-14: 2008 North Carolina Mountain State Fair
Experience an authentic state agricultural fair, with midway rides,
numerous livestock, food and gardening competitions, animal displays and
heritage craft exhibits, plus a wildlife show, petting zoo, pig
races and over 200 vendors. Last year's record attendance surpassed 185,000
people. September 13: Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen in Concert
Steve Gillette is a legendary folk songwriter, guitarist and singer.
His wife Cindy Mangsen sings with a rare voice that radiates smoke
and crystal. Together they create magical music. September 19-20: The Diaries of Adam and EveA wonderful dramatization of the creation story as
only Mark Twain
can tell it. A performance piece starring David Milford and
