Oct. 1-Dec. 16:Young Artists Program In order to help engender a continuing love of the arts and give birth to some budding artists, The Bascom offers fun and thoughtful art classes geared to the skills and interests of children from pre-school to pre-teen, during the school year. Mondays 3 to 4 p.m. (grades 2-5); Tuesdays 11 to 11:30 a.m. (preschoolers) and 3 to 4 p.m. (grades K-1); and Wednesdays 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. (homeschoolers ages 4-7), 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. (homeschoolers ages 8-14), and 3 to 4 p.m. (grades K-2); Cost $15 for a 6-class session, preschool; $30 for a 6-class session, homeschoolers and grades 1-5. Oct. 2 & 3: Autumn Leaves Festival The Bascom in Highlands, NC Annual fundraiser to support a very special mountaintop art gallery. Festivities to include an auction and gala dinner on Friday evening at 6 p.m. at The Farm at Old Edwards Inn (cocktail attire) and the Autumn Leaves Party at 5 to 8 p.m. featuring live bluegrass band, food & spirits, art demonstrations and silent auction (blue jeans casual). Tickets to Fridays Gala are $225, to Saturdays Autumn Leaves Party are $35 or Friday/Saturday Combination tickets are $250. Proceeds benefit The Bascom. Oct. 5: Charity Golf Tournament Sapphire Valley Country Club Hosted by the Rotary Club of Cashiers Valley, this fun event will help to benefit the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau community through the Rotary Clubs sponsorship of special organizations such as The American Cancer Society, Boys Scouts/Girl Scouts of America, Make A Wish Foundation, and Toys for Tots. Price to participate is just $200/player and includes greens fee, cart, box lunch, and goody bag. Tournament will feature a $25,000 prize for the hole-in-one contest. Oct. 8-10: Leaf Festival of Cashiers Valley Cashiers Village Green and Sapphire Valley Resort Hosted by the Greater Cashiers Area Merchants Association and sponsored in part by Coca-Cola, this fun-filled weekend is a celebration of nature and community. Event kicks off on Thursday evening at 8 p.m. with a live concert on the Village Green all are welcome to pack a picnic and dance to the music of the Rye Holler Boys. Friday and Saturday feature an Artisan Festival and Enchanted Village including the work of local artists, merchants market, more live music, and a special childrens section featuring face painting, clowns, and trolley rides. Weekend also includes an exciting Tour of Homes, showcasing some of the areas most stunning mountain homes. The Festival will end on a high note as Grammy Award Winner, BJ Thomas takes the stage on a Concert on the Slopes of Sapphire Valley Resort. Thomas is the man behind such memorable hits as Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head and Hooked on a Feeling. Oct. 9: An Evening with John Muir Highlands Playhouse Stirring portrayal of legendary conservationist, John Muir performed by actor Lee Stetson and presented by the Jackson-Macon Conservation Alliance. Play begins at 7 p.m., but come early to rub elbows with John Muir at the Patrons Party preceding the performance. Party includes wine, heavy hors doeuvres and reserved seating for just $80 ($75 for JMCA members). To attend the play only, tickets are $30 ($25 for JMCA members).
