Scaly Mountain, North Carolina

Between Highlands, North Carolina and Dillard, Georgia, Scaly Mountain is a small unincorporated community with an average elevation of 3,802 feet. The area was settled by innovative pioneers who found the verdant valley floor made perfect grazing area for their herds. Once the domain of Cherokee Indians, if you look hard enough, you may just find ancient pictograms as you hike Scaly Mountain's trails that were worn by quiet moccasins.

Although the average annual snowfall is only 38 inches, the area is transformed into a winter playground by snowmaking at the Scaly Mountain Outdoor Center. Another popular attraction is the Highlands Aerial Park, which offers a spectacular zip line course with long-range views of Nantahala National Forest's mile-high peaks. Residents of metro Atlanta enjoy a short two-hour drive to this peaceful paradise.
