Your VIP passport to the art world’s biggest playground

A glittering playground for art aficionados, tastemakers, and those with an insatiable appetite for luxury and culture, Art Basel Miami Beach is the contemporary art world’s hottest ticket.
Picture pristine beaches, azure waters, and the creative elite descending upon Miami like modern-day Medici, but with better sunglasses. With smart sophistication in spades and a soupçon of South Beach glamour, Art Basel Miami Beach is where trends are set, thoughts are provoked, and Warhols sell for millions.
With the 2023 edition of this legendary art fair hitting the Miami Beach Convention Center in December, jetting to Art Basel Miami Beach is an irresistible excuse for winter sun and art-inspired fun with people and parties galore.
A contemporary art extravaganza
Since launching in 2002, Art Basel Miami Beach has become one of the most eagerly circled dates on VIP calendars — and the red carpet of the art world. You never know what Hollywood star or supermodel might be lurking behind that massive sculpture, contemplating the finer nuances of abstract art.
But more importantly, for Miami, ABMB’s presence has been vital in rehabilitating its image, positioning the city as a vibrant hub for cutting-edge creativity. A confluence of almost 300 leading global galleries (think NYC’s Gagosian, London’s White Cube, and Paris’ Perrotin) showcase works from both the most hyped emerging artists and world-class icons.
From edgy contemporary works and classic paintings to jaw-dropping installations and digital art, no creative expression is off limits at America’s premier art fair. If last year’s knockout sales are anything to go by (Agnes Martin’s 19987 painting Untitled #14 sold for $7m and Andy Warhol’s Flowers for $3.8m) then 2023 will be a stellar year for dealers and buyers clinking champagne flutes over a coveted deal.
Within the striking architectural marvel of the Miami Beach Convention Center, ABMB is spread across seven distinct sectors brimming with chaos and color, all dazzling and bewildering.
The heart and soul of the fair, Galleries is where the world’s top-tier curators converge and heavy hitters come out to play. Along with the usual behemoths Hauser & Wirth, Pace, and David Zwirner, first-timers Galerie Minsky from Paris, New York-based Ortuzar Projects, and San Francisco’s Weinstein Gallery are set to arrive in 2023.
The Nova sector is like the wild child of the art world. It’s where up-and-coming artists present their wares, all of which are created in the last three years. Stare in wonder at outrageous and boundary-pushing large-scale projects at Meridians and unearth historical works and rare finds at Kabinett.

How to enjoy Art Basel Miami Beach
Whether you’re a connoisseur, collector, or just creatively curious, visiting Art Basel Miami Beach is an imperative. With a day ticket, 500,000 square feet of exhibition space is your oyster, giving you hours to peruse the maze masterpiece across the Galleries, Nova, Positions, Edition, Kabinett, Survey, and Magazines sectors as well as the Conversations program.
Buy tickets well in advance to secure your slot and consider spreading your time over multiple days, as trying to cram everything into one day can be overwhelming. To demystify things further, download the Art Basel app for maps, schedules, and real-time updates. It’s your pocket-sized guide to the fair.
If you’re armed with a well-heeled wallet and an eye for investment, Art Basel Miami Beach is the place to strike artistic gold. When you’re prepared to part with more than just spare change for that must-have piece, connecting with gallery representatives (and often the artists themselves) at gallery booths is your best bet.
Don’t be shy, networking is a big part of the ABMB experience, so strike up conversations with fellow art enthusiasts and anyone else who can elevate your visit.
Serious buyers wanting the full VIP treatment should consider the Premium+ card. This golden ticket gives access to the swish Collectors Lounge, Art Basel Vernissage, and a guided tour by ArtNexus. A private view before the fair opens to the public, the Vernissage is the place to secure first dibs and beat the masses.
When you want to stay ahead of the curve and take a gamble on the ‘next big thing,’ make a beeline for the Nova sector. Since it features works from emerging artists, you’ll find many priced lower (around four figures) so this is the zone for starting a new art collection.
Whatever you plan to buy, have a budget in mind and be prepared to negotiate. Don’t forget to ask about shipping and insurance.

On the fair fringes
Art Basel Miami Beach isn’t confined to gallery walls. The Magic City’s vibrant neighborhoods come with their own artistic flair. Indeed, the fair takes place during Miami Art Week. Running alongside Art Basel Miami Beach during Miami Art Week are at least 20 satellite events.
Design Miami is to furniture what Basel is to art. From seating to sideboards, this five-day design showcase is where you can find exquisitely crafted homeware as well as jewelry and décor. If your hunger for art acquisition burns strong, head over to Art Miami, Miami’s longest-running contemporary art fair, no less prestigious than Basel.
Do make a point of immersing yourself in Miami’s artsy areas during your visit. Oh so apropos, the hip Design District is a chic enclave of boutiques, showrooms, and eateries. Peek at Picasso’s at the Institute of Contemporary Art before shopping edgy-luxe handbags at Gelareh Mizrahi and limited-release collaborations at MRKT Deux.
Head to the open-air gallery of Wynwood Walls for vibrant street art. In between admiring colorful murals, hit up this once-gritty-now-trendy district’s other contemporary galleries. For painting and sculpture check out The Margulies Warehouse and seek modern Masters at the Gary Nader Art Centre.

Drink, dance, and dine
When not feasting your eyes on art, feast your palate at Miami’s culinary hotspots. From fusion cuisine that’ll make your taste buds tango to Latin flavors that samba down your throat, this city knows how to dish it out. Pro tip: book all your tables in advance.
A Little Havana institution, Café La Trova serves up its signature empanadas, next-level daiquiris, and colorful Cuban vibes. Over in Wynwood, the Michelin Guide-repped Doya presents Aegean-inspired meze in seriously stylish, ultra-relaxed surroundings. For fancy French fine dining, venture to the Design District for Joël Robuchon’s two-star L’Atelier where you can savor his Foie Gras Royale while rubbing shoulders with the A list.
Art Basel Miami Beach is notorious for its epic parties, with world-class DJs, celebrity sightings, and dancing until dawn. By day, the best pool parties can be found at the Sagamore Hotel and Art Deco-esque Strawberry Moon at The Goodtime Hotel, by partners Pharrell Williams and David Grutman. For after-dark hijinks, strut to the Basement at The Miami Beach EDITION for thumping sets by the likes of Carl Cox. Just remember, what happens in Miami stays… in your Instagram Stories.

Check in, chill out
Any trip to Art Basel Miami Beach requires a suitable place to lay your head after hopping from the art booth to the nightclub. Of course, nowhere else does glitz and glamor quite like Miami Beach so you’re spoilt for choice with sleek hotels.
Faena Hotel is where art, theater, and sheer opulence converge. With Damien Hirst’s Gone But Not Forgotten sculpture (a golden mammoth skeleton) greeting you upon arrival, you know you’re in for a treat. When the art overload gets real, hit up the Tierra Santa Healing House spa — you’ll feel as rejuvenated as one of Hirst’s formaldehyde-preserved sharks.
If there’s one place that screams “Miami chic,” it’s the Fontainebleau. With its legendary bowtie-shaped pool, celebrity sightings galore, and a history that reads like a Hollywood script, it’s the perfect place to see and be seen during Art Basel. Bask in the sun at one of the many poolside cabanas, sip cocktails at the Bleau Bar, or dine at one of Fontainebleau’s top-notch restaurants.
South Beach is synonymous with glamour, and The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach fits right in. Its refined elegance and Art Deco design offer a timeless backdrop for your ABMB experience. With the beach just steps away, you can take a leisurely stroll along the shore and contemplate that essential piece you long to buy.
