As shortened days and frosty nights descend over North America, vacationers seek refuge in Boca Grande, Florida, where the sun beams its comforting warmth and ocean breezes soothe winter-weary souls. There lies a historic island gem, The Gasparilla Inn & Club. The iconic resort, steeped in tradition, offers a blend of timeless elegance and modern luxury on Gasparilla Island off Florida’s western coastline. Though popular year-round, the inn serves as a beacon for those escaping the frigid north during colder months.
In the late 1800s, Boca Grande represented a remote and untamed outpost on Florida’s southwest coast, but much has changed over the past century and a half. Initially constructed in 1913, The Gasparilla serves as a testament to Florida’s transformation into a premier destination for travelers nationwide. In its early days, the hotel served as a seasonal getaway for notable historical figures such as J.P. Morgan, Henry duPont, Henry Ford, and Harvey Firestone, establishing Gasparilla Island as an acclaimed hotspot for tycoons who often arrived by yacht.
Today, The Gasparilla represents one of the largest surviving resorts of the early 20th century, with the addition of numerous modernizing upgrades throughout the years. The inn exudes a captivating sense of history with its Mediterranean Revival-style architecture, white stucco facades, and lush greenery. Owners and staff strive to maintain the essence of a bygone era while seamlessly incorporating the modern amenities sought by travelers today.

A Historic Setting Complemented by Modern Luxury
Each of the original inn’s rooms and suites, furnished with period-appropriate décor and modern conveniences, provide a harmonious blend of comfort and elegance. In recent years, the property has expanded its accommodations with the addition of luxury cottages and suites that offer spacious living areas, private terraces, and state-of-the-art facilities. The new units allow guests to relish the privacy of a home away from home while enjoying the famous world-class service and social activities of the inn and club. Foodies consistently find The Gasparilla a welcome balm for the senses. With multiple dining options, guests can savor a variety of cuisines, from classic American to fresh seafood. The inn’s classic restaurant, The Pink Elephant, has tantalized taste buds with its innovative menu and captivating ambiance for more than 60 years. Indulge in Crispy Thai Grouper or Pan Roasted Red Snapper for lunch, and don’t overlook classic Southern appetizers like Smoked Fish Dip or White Cheddar and Pimento cheese. As a 2023 recipient of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, the Pink Elephant staff are certain to guide diners toward the most fitting wine to complement their coastal cuisine.
The inn is also home to the popular Beach Club restaurant, serving delectable dishes and poolside cocktails and overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. The Gasparilla Salad or a plate of Grilled Fish Tacos make for a healthy but luxurious beachside lunch. BZ’s, located on the main floor of the inn, functions as a popular gathering place for guests from mid-day to late night. Grab a drink or lunch, and head out onto the terrace for a view of the fifth green of The Gasparilla Golf Club and the Charlotte Harbor in the distance.
For the active vacationer, a range of recreational pleasures awaits on Gasparilla Island. The Pete Dye-designed golf course presents challenge and delight for guests of all skill levels, with its unparalleled views and consistently temperate weather. Nearly seven thousand yards of par-72 course await the island golfer. The tennis courts, alongside the croquet lawns, provide opportunities for friendly competition and leisurely games. No matter how visitors spend their time outdoors, incoming breezes from both Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico supply balmy relief.
The more adventurous might find themselves traipsing down to the inn’s private beaches and pursuing a variety of aquatic adventures such as paddleboarding, kayaking, and fishing. Explore the island from unique vantage points, enjoying familiar and much-loved activities in a refreshing, sunnier landscape.
The on-site spa provides rejuvenating treatments after a long day of recreation beneath the Florida sunshine. Hospitable spa staff provide guidance toward the ultimate restorative treatments, particularly during winter months, such as steam rooms, saunas, a variety of massage techniques, and acupuncture. A private courtyard creates the setting for a heated, 80-foot lap pool.
