Zachary-Tolbert House tours resume

Tours of Cashiers historic Zachary-Tolbert House Resume May 15

As visitors and summer residents of the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau return to the area for the season, the Cashiers Historical Society is proud to announce the return of their tours of The Zachary-Tolbert House on May 15. Guided tours of the lovely 157-year-old Greek revival home, considered the crown jewel of Cashiers historic homes, will run Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. through October 17. The last tour begins at 2 p.m. and tours last approximately 30-45 minutes. Admission to the home and grounds is just $5.00, and is FREE to Cashiers Historical Society Members. Set in the heart of Cashiers, at 1940 Hwy 107, the Zachary-Tolbert House serves as a lasting tribute to some of the earliest pioneers along the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau.

In 1832, Colonel John A. Zachary first travelled here from his home in Surry County over 200 miles away to explore the ancient forests and lush landscape of Western North Carolina. He returned with his family the following spring to become the first permanent homesteaders in the area. Their ancestors still live and work here today (including Silver Creeks very own broker, Elaine Zachary!) Colonel Zacharys son, Mordecai a skilled carpenter built what is now known as the Zachary-Tolbert house as a wedding gift for his young bride, Elvira Keener, in 1852. The Tolbert Family owned the home for most of the 20th century. Beyond a family home, the house also served as a summer retreat and inn and now houses the Cashiers Historical Society. It opened as a public museum in 2001 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Lovingly restored to its original glory, The Zachary-Tolbert House showcases much of the original furniture crafted by Mordecai Zachary himself.
