Broker Spotlight With Chuck Self

Chuck Self's extensive marketing background allows him to position his client's properties in the best light, resulting in impressive deals. Before his venture into the domain of real estate, Chuck enjoyed a three-decade-long tenure in the television and entertainment sector, achieving the role of Sr. Vice President of Warner Brothers Domestic Television’s Southeastern market. His transition to real estate was not so much a leap as it was a natural progression. The experience of buying and selling properties, especially vacation homes, instilled in him a genuine passion for real estate. Chuck perceives it not just as a mere transactional task, but as a delightful endeavor that over time is a sound investment.

His dedication to Silver Creek Real Estate Group has been unwavering since the inception of his career in 2012. The choice, as he puts it, was driven by his background in marketing and the unparalleled quality of Silver Creek’s marketing techniques. This seamless alignment of his values and the company’s expertise led to a partnership destined for success. Outside the office, Chuck is an outdoorsman at heart, whether he’s taking in the mesmerizing beauty of the Plateau, relishing quality time with his family, or exploring the flavors of the culinary world through cooking.

But perhaps what stands out most about Chuck is his client-centric approach. He isn’t just about the brick-and-mortar aspects of real estate; he digs deeper, seeking to understand the lifestyles and needs of his clients. His advice to potential homebuyers on the Plateau? “Don’t settle.” Chuck believes in under-promising and over-delivering, always ensuring that he’s not just meeting but exceeding the expectations of his clients. His mantra: always do the right thing, whether it’s being seen or not. It’s this deep-seated integrity, combined with his rich experience, that makes Chuck Self a beacon in the real estate arena.

For the holiday issue of NC Living Magazine, we connected with him to uncover the passion behind one of the top brokers on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau.

NCL: What goals are you working toward in 2024?
CS: To deliver even more dreams for both my buyers and sellers than I did this year. And to approach each transaction as if I were purchasing or selling the property I’m representing my clients on.

NCL: How long have you been a real estate broker and how long have you been with Silver Creek Real Estate Group?
CS: Since 2012. I have been with Silver Creek since the start of my real estate career.

NCL: Tell us a little bit about your background and what led you to work in real estate.
CS: I was in the television and entertainment industry for 30 years, most recently as Sr. VP Sales, Southeast for Warner Brothers Domestic Television. I bought and sold several properties, including vacation homes, and have always felt like real estate was not only fun, but also a great investment.

NCL: Why did you choose to work with Silver Creek?
CS: I was a marketing major in college and worked in sales and marketing throughout my time in the television industry. I’m a huge proponent of cutting-edge marketing. Once I got my real estate license and was researching the local real estate market … Silver Creek’s marketing was meteorically superior, in my opinion. The rest became history.

NCL: When you’re not selling real estate, how do you enjoy spending your time?
CS: I most enjoy when my daughter or son and his family are here, and enjoying the plateau with them. Otherwise, I enjoy being in the outdoors for long hikes or out on a boat on Lake Glenville. I’ve also recently become enamored with cooking, whether it’s from following a recipe given to me by friends or clients or creating something new on my own.

NCL: What is your favorite season on the Plateau?
CS: That’s a tough one. But if I can only pick one, it would be the fall because of the incredible beauty and the crisp temperatures. I also enjoy spring/summer, as well as the beauty of these mountains in the winter after even just a light snowfall.

NCL: What is your favorite festival or special event that takes place on the Plateau?
CS: There are so many. But  because of my involvement with the Blue Ridge School Foundation, I’d have to say it’s the Nashville Songwriters event we do every year. I enjoy being a part of working to put the event together, and enjoy being entertained by the Songwriters at the actual event.

NCL: Outside of the Plateau, where is your favorite place to travel?
CS: Domestically, I like sneaking down to SW Florida for a little winter respite. Particularly, Naples, FL. Otherwise, I love Italy. I enjoy the vast history and the incredible beauty of the countryside. I seem to like places that have a “Naples” in them!

NCL: What advice would you give to someone starting their search for a home on the Plateau?
CS: Don’t settle. Just let me know what’s important to you. Not just from number of bedrooms, bathrooms, size and/or view … but what type of lifestyle you lead. Do you spend a lot or little time in the kitchen? Do you stay indoors more than out? Tell me about your extended family. Once I know those things, we can get to work finding you just the right place to enjoy our little slice of paradise up here.

NCL: What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned while working as a broker?
CS: Listen to what’s important to your buyers and sellers. Under promise and over deliver. And most importantly, always do the right thing. Even when no one is looking, and when you won’t get a pat on the back for doing what’s right.

Chuck is an experienced, professional individual. He is great when buying or selling. I will definitely use Chuck again in the future. He is always available and is quick to communicate. When things got difficult Chuck made the process as easy as possible. You want Chuck in your corner handling a stressful situation, he gives you a necessary comfort during a major decision.
