Get Hooked On Fly Fishing at Brookings Anglers

Words by Emily Davis  |  Photography and Videography by Courtney Snyder

Outdoorsmen who arrive on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau this Spring will be greeted by a brand new Brookings Anglers store on Cashiers Lake. The new space houses double the square footage of the former location, plus new amenities that provide an immersive browsing and shopping experience for both aspiring and seasoned fishermen.

A grand opening is planned for May 11. The festivities begin at noon, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a barbecue feast provided by Fork Grove Barbecue, and live music by Young Mountain Magic. Attendees can browse a wide selection of gear and accessories from top brands like Simms, Orvis, Patagonia, Sage, Scott, Yeti, and Fishpond. Brookings’ staff will be on-site to lend expert advice and help design your next fly fishing adventure. In addition to the latest and greatest fly fishing equipment, store manager Matthew Canter says, “We’re selling experiences that will become lifelong memories.”

When asked to describe the typical experience for a beginning fly fisherman, Canter replies, “All you need to bring is your sunglasses and a good pair of socks; we supply everything else you need.” Brookings offers guided trips, with all equipment included, during which the primary goal is to “have fun and catch fish!”

For those who wish to learn more technical details, introductory courses and a full-day school are available. Staff recommend that first-time fishermen book a trip to “get their feet wet” and then participate in the fishing school to sharpen skills once a passion for fly fishing has taken hold.

For the more experienced angler, Brookings’ staff can cater trips depending on the desired experience. Those from out of town might feel curious about the more secluded, backcountry streams that are often local secrets in rural areas like Cashiers. Guides can also design trips around skill sets that the angler wants to develop, such as casting techniques, small stream techniques, net fishing styles, using dry flies, and more.

For those looking to expand their adventure off the Plateau, guides can arrange fly fishing trips to locations as far-flung as Montana, Brazil, Argentina, British Columbia, and the Bahamas. Currently, the store’s anglers are scouting waterways so they can add Cuba to the list. “We always scout first,” says Canter, “so that we can be sure to provide a top-notch experience for our clients.”

All trips are coordinated with lodges geared toward fly fishing, such as the Agua Boa Amazon Lodge in Brazil, to ensure that the experience meets and exceeds expectations. In addition to world-class fishing, the lodges provide five-star food and accommodations. Participants can rest assured knowing they will return from their adventures to comfortable rooms and satisfying meals, with all details arranged for them.

For Brookings guides and their clients, “fly fishing is more than just catching fish,” says Canter. “It’s about interacting with nature and enjoying the terrific natural resources around us.”

Those who visit the new Brookings location on Cashiers Lake should plan to kick back, relax on the outdoor deck, and stay awhile. In addition to the store’s retail space and customized, guided excursions, the new space functions as a central meeting point for local and visiting fishermen.

The store’s Blue Line Bar features craft beers from Edmund’s Oast Brewing Company in Charleston, plus local brews from Whiteside Brewing Company in Cashiers, Innovation Brewing in Sylva, Burial Beer Company in Asheville, and more. With a fireplace and TVs on the back deck, a view of the lake, and horseshoe pits just outside, Brookings provides a cozy spot to hang out, share fishing stories, and perhaps fib about your largest catch. It’s more than a store; Brookings is a hub of excitement where expert consultants help you design your next adventure.
